Summer Reading for Trumbull High School All students are required to complete summer reading prior to entering 9th grade. Please visit the link below for details. They all worked on their thesis and graphic organizer in class, but most students are not done. When they walk into class on Monday, they should be ready to write. They will write on Monday in class, they can work on the essay response at home on Monday night, and they will finish, edit, & revise on Tuesday in class. They need to submit by the end of class on Tuesday. The assignment and all handouts from class are posted on Google Classroom. The final essay guidelines for To Kill a Mockingbird will be handed out on Tuesday, May 29. Please note that students will plan their response in class on June 1. They should finish planning over the weekend so that they are ready to write on Monday, June 4. Students will write their response on Monday, June 4. They will edit, revise, and submit on Tuesday, June 5. ****Please note that I adjusted the reading schedule (part 2) slightly. The only changes were for Monday, 5/14 & Tuesday, 5/15. The changes are reflected on the attachments and will be on the students' bookmarks. 5/7/18 - Keep up with the reading and annotations each night. The schedule is posted to the right of this message and on the To Kill a Mockingbird page under Handouts. The audio book and the ebook are also available on that page as well as on the Links page. 5/3/18 - Finish reading chapter 1 and read chapter 2. Also complete the annotations pages for those chapters. (We will do most of chapter 1 in class). 5/1/18 - Student will begin reading To Kill a Mockingbird on Thursday, May 3. Please note that I have attached the reading schedule to the right of this message and under the Handouts section (click on To Kill a Mockingbird). I have also included links to the audio book and the ebook under Handouts and on the links page of this website. 4/25/18 - We will be reading the novel To Kill a Mockingbird starting next week. Students will have reading assignments and annotations to complete each night including the weekends. It is important for students to keep up with the reading assignments in order to be prepared for class activities and assessments. 4/5/18 - The verbals quiz is tomorrow. Study gerunds, participles, and infinitives. 4/3/18 - Study!!! The test on Coach lessons 1-4 is tomorrow. Review vocabulary and the types of questions in each section. 3/29/18 - Reminder - the test on Coach lessons 1-4 will be on Tuesday, April 3. 3/23/18 - There will be a quiz on active/passive voice on Monday. Also, on April 3, there will be a test on Coach lessons 1-4. 3/22/18 - Finish grammar practice for active/passive voice. 3/19/18 - Finish the narrative brief writes if you did not finish in class. 3/14/18 - Finish the argumentative body paragraph that you began in class today. 3/12/18 - The article trailers are now due tomorrow, March 13, even if we do not have school. Please copy the shareable link and paste it to the assignment in Google Classroom. Also, all 1920s essay revisions are now due by Friday, March 16. 3/2/18 through 3/8/18 - The homework is to keep working on your article trailer. Introduce the topic/event/person, explain the challenge, explain/analyze the resilience. The trailer is due on Friday, March 9. Please submit in Google Classroom. 2/28/18 - Students began a mini project. They should use one of research tools that we reviewed to find an article that has an example of resiliency. Once they find an article, students will create a "trailer" to present their information. Tonight's homework is to choose an article. They can begin their trailer if they want. They will submit their link to me in Google Classroom. 2/26/18 - Your final essay is due tomorrow. Please use the editing and revising checklist you received in class today to guide you. Finish making adjustments, turn the essay in online, AND print out a copy to hand in tomorrow. I have attached a copy of the checklist in Google Classroom. 2/23/18 - Over the weekend, students should revise their body paragraphs. The two things to focus on are citing their quotes properly and unpacking their evidence. We began this in class today. All reference materials are posted to the assignment in Google Classroom. The final essay is due Tuesday, 2/27. Students should hand in a printed copy. 2/22/18 - Students should finish drafting their body and conclusion. Periods 3 & 4 should just finish drafting their body paragraphs. 2/21/18 - Periods 1,2,& 5 - finish drafting your intro. and body one. Periods 3 & 4 - see below. 2/20/18 - Periods 1,2, & 5 - finish planning your essay. Be sure you have a thesis statement. Periods 3 & 4 - finish planning your essay AND write your intro. Since we will not meet tomorrow, this should be done for Thursday. Type your intro in Google Classroom. The assignment is posted. See reference/tip sheets to the right. 2/14/18 - Students should finish the book tonight (pages 98-115). After our long weekend, students will be writing an analytical essay about human resiliency in The Boys in the Boat and Night. 2/13/18 - Students should read pages 85-97 tonight. They should also finish journal #3. Journals are listed under Handouts and Night. 2/12/18 - Students should read pages 66-84 tonight. 2/9/18 - Students should read pages 47-65 over the weekend. 2/8/18 - Students should read pages 23-46 tonight. 2/6/18 Mrs. Bogos's classes - Complete journal #3: On page 12, it says, "The ghetto was ruled by neither German nor Jew; it was ruled by delusion." Respond to this quote. What does he mean? Why is it important? Mrs. Monaco's classes - Read pages 3-22 if you have not already done so. 2/5/18 - Students are beginning the book Night today. They should read pages 3-22 tonight for homework. 1/30/18 - Finish journal #9. 1/26/18 - Students should finish their analytical paragraph if they did not finish in class. 1/24/18 - Students should be sure that all of their journals are complete. Journal topics can be found under Handouts and Boys in the Boat. 1/23/18 - Students should read chapter 26 and the Epilogue tonight. 1/22/18 - Students should read chapters 24 & 25 tonight. 1/19/18 - Students should read chapters 20, 21, 22, & 23 over the weekend. 1/18/18 - Students should read chapters 17, 18, & 19 tonight. 1/16/18 - There is no reading assignment tonight. Use the time to catch up on reading and/or journals if you are behind. 1/12/18 - Over the long weekend, students should read chapters 13, 14, 15, & 16. 1/11/18 - Students should read chapters 11 & 12 tonight. 1/10/18 - Please read chapters 8, 9, & 10 tonight. 1/9/18 - No reading tonight. Students should catch up on journals and on reading if they are behind. Journal topics can be found under Handouts and Boys in the Boat. 1/8/18 - Students should read chapters 5, 6, & 7 tonight. 1/3/18 - Today we began our novel study of The Boys in the Boat. We read the prologue and chapter 1 in class. Students should read chapters 2, 3, and 4 for homework. 12/18/17 - The final essay is due tomorrow. Please print out a hard copy and submit online. The reminder power point is attached to the right for your reference. 12/12 - Students are working on their 1920s essay. See class schedule and due dates below. Homework each night is to finish the class work. Tuesday, 12/12 - Intro. Wednesday, 12/13 - Draft the body paragraphs (at least two) Thursday, 12/14 - I will do a mini lesson to help students "unpack" their evidence. Students will revise their body paragraphs. Friday, 12/15 - conclusion and begin editing Students MUST print a hard copy of their rough draft and bring it to class on Monday. Monday, 12/18 - Editing and revising workshop. Students should make final changes to their essay at home and print out a new copy. The essay along with the works consulted page is due Tuesday, 12/19. 11/27 - Today we are beginning our 1920s research unit (informational unit). Students need to read and annotate the article "The Restless Decade" for homework tonight. This article will help to build their background knowledge of the decade. Students will need to choose a topic for their research by Wednesday, 11/29. They reviewed the topic choices today in class. Please see the project calendar posted to the right for more information about the unit. 11/16 - Your final narrative is due tomorrow. Copy and paste draft #3 into the new assignment in Google Classroom called "Narrative - Final Draft". Make final adjustments. Be sure to submit online AND print a copy to turn in tomorrow. Reference sheets to help you edit and revise are posted to the right. Make sure you double space and indent where necessary. 11/14 - We have been working on a personal narrative. After generating many ideas, the students chose one and wrote a flash draft on Friday. On Monday, we experimented with various leads. Students revised their paper. Today, we worked on zooming in to an important part and really exploding the moment by adding thought shots and snapshots. Tonight, students should finish revising draft #2. They need to find a sentence to expand and highlight it. Then they need to add the snapshot in red font and thought shots in blue font. Then find another sentence to explode (if you have another part to zoom in on) and add thought shots and snapshots. They began this in class. Coming up... Wednesday, 11/15 - story endings Thursday, 11/16 - editing & revising (grammar, word choice, etc.) Friday, 11/17 - Final narrative is due. Students should print a copy on Thursday night and hand it in on Friday. This is the final test grade for trimester 1. 10/26 - Remember that note cards and source cards are due tomorrow. Thirty note cards are required. If you would like extra points, you must do forty note cards. Source cards are separate. Remember that they MUST be in the correct format. See your reference sheets. Oral presentations will be Monday and Tuesday. We will select the order tomorrow. 10/17 - Write the "I Dream a World" poem about your character. Use Langston Hughes's poem and the annotations/activities from class to help you. Upcoming assignments: 1. The short story assessment, which is a test grade, will be this Thursday, 10/19. Students will have a little bit of time on Friday to finish if they need it. 2. Character analysis assignment - this is due by the end of class on Monday. Students are using their annotations from the book, the poem they are writing about their character, and pictures/symbols to put together a character analysis slide. I will assign it on Google Classroom. Students are doing pieces of it throughout this week. They will put it all together on Monday in class. They will print and hand it in by the end of class on Monday, 10/23. This is a quiz grade. 3. Students need to choose one career that they would like to research for our mini career project. Topics should be chosen by Monday, 10/23. 4. Tuesday, 10/24 - Students should bring a two-pocket folder and about 50 lined index cards in a Ziploc bag to class today. 5. We will research in school on Wednesday and Thursday. Thirty note cards are required. 6. Students will do oral presentations about their career on 10/30 and 10/31. 9/27 - We are beginning our novel study of The Outsiders. Students will be required to follow the reading schedule and complete just the chart on the the annotations pages each night. The chart is used to track a character throughout the book. I have attached the reading schedule to the right for your convenience. You can also find it along with other related handouts under Handouts and Outsiders. There are links to the audio and PDF versions of the book under Handouts. 9/26- Finish just the chart side of the worksheet for "The Lady, or the Tiger." 9/18-9/22 - Remember to finish the Career Exploration Packet that you received on Monday, September 18. It is due this Monday, September 25. Also, please finish the analytical paragraph that we did in class today if you did not already do so. |
